Ode To Joy

This is a nice tune for Christmas time (or really any time)!

I’ve deliberately left the note names and fingers off this one. This is for YOU to fill in at home! You may wish to print out the PDF attached to “Note Reading 101” if you need a reference.

For each note, try this:

  • Ask yourself – is it a line or a space?
  • If it’s in a space, remember that rhymes with FACE – which space is the note in?
  • If it’s on a line, remember our mnemonic “Elephants Got Big Dirty Feet” — which line is the note on?
  • Got the note? Write the letter neatly underneath.
  • Now find all the other places where that note appears and fill them all in!

Hint
The first note is ‘F#’ or ‘Fis’

Practice Tip
This one can be played ALL on the D string if we use our 4th finger for ‘A’.

Have a listen to the recording

Listen and play along. Keep a steady pace and don’t rush.

What’s this note?

You’ll find one note on the third line that looks different to the rest. I’ve written it this way to give you two options.

Both of these notes are ‘A’.

  • ‘Bottom A’ is 1st finger on G string
  • ‘Middle A’ is either open A string or 4th finger on D string.

Try playing it both ways.
